CREATING SACRED SPACE
Create a meditation space that will invite you into your daily practice.
Your space will be personally designed to feed your soul along your spiritual journey. It can be as elaborate as a whole room, or as simple as a spot on a table or a basket of items that speak to you.
1. Determine where you would like your space.
an unused room in your house
If there is a room that is available - a guest room, office, large closet- you can turn this into your sacred space.
a favorite chair, corner, nook
Perhaps there is a quiet spot in the corner of a room that holds your favorite chair or a cushion, that could be your space for meditation.
a small table, nightstand, or shelf
A small space on your nightstand or an end table or shelf could serve as an altar.
a basket
if you cannot leave your altar out, a nice basket can hold your sacred objects which you can take out to use or take with you to…
a spot outside in nature, at a park, along a lakeshore
2. Decide what you will include in your space:
if you have a dedicated space in your home, a chair or cushion, yoga mat, or writing table
The items you bring to your space will be those that your spirit are drawn to. Once you open yourself to receive items with your energy, you will be surprised what you find. You don’t want your space too cluttered, but you can change out items as new ones come into your life. Some examples may include:
candle, incense, feather, rock, photo, plant, prayer beads, art, gemstones, chime, bell, flute, devotional book…
I suggest you keep a journal for spiritual inspirations, questions, thoughts, and interior dialogue. You may also add some items for soul art expression like markers, pens, pencils, and drawing paper.
3. Set up the space bringing good energy into it.
Start with just a few items. They should be those that call you into meditation, silence, and inward peace. When your eyes glance towards your space, your heart follows. Spiritual practices that seemed weighty or burdensome are now inviting.
